Planetary Seals and Magic Squares
Updated
Planetary sigils come from magic squares (kameas), grids of numbers where every row, column and diagonal adds up to the same total. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa published the seven classic planetary squares and their seals in Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1533).
The seven squares
Saturn 3×3, Jupiter 4×4, Mars 5×5, Sun 6×6, Venus 7×7, Mercury 8×8, Moon 9×9. Each planet's square size follows its traditional order in the old geocentric sky.
How a sigil is traced
Convert each letter of a name or word to a number, find those numbers on the planet's square, and draw a line from one to the next. The resulting path is the sigil. Agrippa also gave fixed 'seals' for each planet built from the whole square.
Traditional meanings and days
Sun — vitality, success (Sunday). Moon — intuition, dreams (Monday). Mars — courage (Tuesday). Mercury — communication (Wednesday). Jupiter — growth, abundance (Thursday). Venus — love, beauty (Friday). Saturn — discipline, boundaries (Saturday).
Linking it to your chart
Many people work with the planet that rules their sun sign — for example Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Aries. Our personal sigils use your ruling planet and element to shape the geometry.
