How to Make a Sigil (Step by Step)

Updated

A sigil is a symbol made from a written intention. The method below comes from Austin Osman Spare's early-1900s technique and is still the most common way to make one. It takes about ten minutes.

Short on time? The free sigil generator does steps 2 and 3 for you.

Step 1: Write a clear intention

One sentence, present tense, positive: "I am confident when I speak" rather than "I don't want to be nervous". Specific beats vague.

Step 2: Remove vowels and repeated letters

"I am confident when I speak" becomes M C N F D T W H S P K. This breaks the words so your mind stops reading them as language.

Step 3: Combine the letters into one shape

Overlap, rotate and merge the letters into a single glyph. Or use a letter wheel: plot each letter on a circle and connect them in order. Simplify until it looks like a symbol, not letters.

Step 4: Add meaning (optional)

Enclose it in a circle for protection, add the glyph of your ruling planet, or color it to match the intention — green for money, pink for love, black for protection.

Step 5: Charge the sigil

Focus on it in a heightened state: after meditation, during exercise, or at a meaningful moon phase. The goal is a moment of full attention.

Step 6: Let it go

Put it away, burn it, or set it as a wallpaper you stop consciously noticing. The traditional idea is that forgetting the words lets the intention work without doubt getting in the way.
